Quickstart

About a minute, one signature, no gas and no signup form.

Open your inbox#

  1. Open the app

Go to /app and connect a wallet. MetaMask, Rabby and Coinbase Wallet all work, as does WalletConnect.
  2. Sign in to XMTP

Approve the signature request. It is a plain message signature, not a transaction: nothing is spent and nothing moves on chain. This is what registers an XMTP inbox for your address and binds this browser to it.
  3. Start a conversation

Hit the + button, paste any address, and send. Quetz checks that the address has an inbox before opening the thread.

Nothing happens until you sign

Connecting a wallet only shares your address. The signature is a separate step, and until you approve it Quetz has no inbox to read or write.

If the address has no inbox#

The person you are messaging needs to have opened an XMTP inbox at least once, in Quetz or in any other XMTP client. Until they do, Quetz will tell you the address is not reachable rather than sending into nothing.

The fastest way around this is to send them your Quetz link. Opening it walks them through the same two steps above, and the conversation is waiting when they arrive.

Using it on more than one device#

Sign in on each device you want to use. Every browser is a separate XMTP installation under the same inbox, and history syncs between them once they are both registered.

  • Message history is kept in an encrypted database inside your browser.
  • Clearing site data removes that local copy. Sign in again and it re-syncs from the network.
  • Switching wallets switches inboxes. Quetz closes the old one as soon as the connected account changes.
